There must be many fathers around the country who have experienced the cruelest most crushing rejection of all: Their children have ended up rooting for the wrong team.
Nick Hornby
Every father wants to be remembered. We want to pass things on to our children that will endure long after we are gone. Few gifts endure like a team to love; and a team to hate.
The Green Bay Packers. Titletown, USA. Lombardi. The Ice Bowl. We are true disciples of the green and gold. This year we have witnessed the resurrection of Brett Favre’s career.
The Dallas Cowboys. For no particular reason, we despise them with all the venom we can muster. This benign prejudice helps give shape and form to our lives. We are defined by our dislikes.
When the Packers and Cowboys square off. It doesn’t really matter who wins. My son and I will be carrying on the rich tradition of forging our bond on the anvil of mindless passion. Let it long endure.
