I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I ended up where I intended to be. Douglas Adams
I had a birthday in August and friends gave me some books on planning for old age. Vanity prevents me from thinking of myself as an "old person," yet, I am quite comfortable thinking about what kind of "old person" I want to be (someday).
It is my nature to regularly assess where I am and where I am going with my life. In spite of careful planning, life does not unfold according to our design. It is marvelously unscripted. Oddly, the unscripted nature of life makes planning all the more important.
I like adventure and I certainly plan for an old age that includes plenty of extraordinary adventure. But the quality of my life depends more on simple daily pleasures than glamorous events. I don’t want to neglect the small stuff.
As I draw my blueprint for old age I want to be prepared for many things. I may not go where I intend to go, but I want to end up where I intend to be.
